Time Management

Time Management

Time Management is one of those ideas that is good in theory, but in the real world, it never seems to work. Like many good ideas, the principles behind most time management courses and books fail to take into account the human element: that is, how people actually develop and adopt new habits, and then how they convince others to buy-in and support them.

Cool Time: the book.Bristall Morgan offers a unique method for learning how to manage time and priorities, called Cool Time, which combines the principles of project management with a sound understanding of the motivations and priorities of our human colleagues, to ensure that the right work gets done the right way, and that stress is replaced by a real sense of control.

The success of the program comes from a combination of extensive assessment, complete customization and attentive follow-up, all for an extremely competitive price.

Cool Time was developed and is delivered by Steve Prentice. The companion book, Cool Time: A Hands-On Plan for Managing Work and Balancing Time is published by John Wiley & Sons, and is available in bookstores. Steve works closely with every Cool Time student for a full year after the session to ensure good habits stay strong. In terms of actual abilities, the kinds of skills Cool Time develops include how to:

  • Prioritize - and stick to it
  • Become more organized in habits and workspace
  • Develop powerful focus
  • Say "no" to additional tasks as and when appropriate
  • Structure the day in a way that works
  • Use e-mail and other technologies effectively
  • Run productive and time efficient meetings
  • Understand the role of nutrition
  • Maintain Work-Life balance
  • Manage conflicts
  • Develop blocks of effective time
  • Eliminate fatigue, delay, ambiguity and confusion in day-to-day work situations
  • Deal with distractions, interruptions and overload
  • Handle "immediate" priorities such as walk-in clients, customer phonecalls
  • Structure each day for maximum productivity, minimum stress
  • Deal with procrastination
  • Maximize client relationships and sales opportunities

Our sessions are interactive, using anonymous case studies drawn from the pre-course assessments, and participants are encouraged to work through and solve their time problems according to the principles of effective Adult Education. Of great interest is the opportunity to use "yes, but" arguments, which allow the principles of Cool Time to surmount the expected resistance and obstacles and actually find opportunities to take root back at the student's workplace.

Corporate Workshops
Our corporate workshops are delivered as half-day or full-day in-house sessions. We deliver them with your company in mind - your budget, your business, and the availability of your staff.

When you host a corporate Cool Time workshop with Steve Prentice as facilitator, you ensure heightened acceptance and implementation. As colleagues simultaneously hear and understand our branded terms (such as Keystone Time), it becomes part of the cultural lexicon and easier to adopt. And when managers or senior personnel attend all or part of a Cool Time workshop, it reinforces levels of confidence and commitment among staff.

Past clients have found the optimum set-up to be one or two 4-hour half day session(s) starting promptly at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 12:30. This offers several benefits:

  • maximized learning duration without information overload
  • class is held in the morning, when most people are at their most attentive and alert
  • greater opportunity for relaxation and learning, knowing that a whole day's work is not being "lost," and that the student can return to the office after lunch

For organizations with many staff members to teach, two sessions can be held in one day: 8:30-12:30 and 1:00-5:00. (Afternoon sessions are structured slightly differently to compensate for the "afternoon effect.")

The content and benchmarks are determined through the following procedure:

  • Interview with stakeholders
  • Interview with role models
  • On-site observation and interviews of selected staff (when & where appropriate)
  • Confidential pre-course questionnaire
  • Review and approval of curriculum by stakeholders
  • Follow up: Every student receives one full year of personalized follow-up
  • Stakeholders receive a summary of expectations, as well as 1-month and 3-month benchmark follow-ups.
