Executive Profile: Howard Suissa - Suissa Computers

Howard Suissa is a designer and business owner who thinks out-of-the-box - literally. From his studio north of Toronto he creates one-of-a-kind computers using traditional materials such as wood and glass, to replace the beige box that must of us have stashed under our desks. The computer components themselves are placed inside, and are upgradeable and replaceable as time goes by. "People store their memories in their computers," he says, "pictures from cameras, cellphones, video cameras. I wanted to create something to store them in which is as beautiful as the memories themselves."

Howard mentions that although he started out designing his computers for the home market, he has sold many to executives and companies who desire a unique showcase to market their own brand.

The designs are striking, and allow the computer to take a central place in open view in the office or living room. So much so that some people consider them as art, and intend to pass them on to future generations as "heirloom computers." This makes perfect sense, given that the "guts" can be replaced at any time.
Howard showed me an external hard-drive - a beautiful wooden circle with a stained glass top that only gave away its function by the presence of two discreet USB ports mounted on its side. Such a piece would look perfectly at home on a coffee table or mantelpiece. A great place to download your camera's pictures for display onto your big-screen TV.
